Rooibos to Improve Your Health: Colic and Reflux

Continuing with the series about Rooibos, we will now talk about the second beneficial effect it has on our health:

Rooibos-effect 2: AGAINST COLIC AND REFLUX

The ancient inhabitants of South Africa already took this plant in the form of herbal tea to relieve colic and reflux in their children and adults. Until recently, scientific research was carried out on this property of the plant and it was discovered that it does indeed have antispasmodic effects. It is believed that these are due to the existence of 2 flavonoid compounds contained in the Rooibos plant: quercetin and luteolin.

For this reason, it is common in South Africa to give it as drinking water to babies or small children, and it can also be used to prepare milk formula in the bottle. They drink Rooibos without any added flavour and this is how it is recommended to give it to babies 3 months and older. When the infant is 1 year old, it can be given with some added flavour, although it is important to check if the flavouring or other ingredients it contains are natural, otherwise it is better to continue drinking pure Rooibos.

It is also interesting to know that there are already certified organic Rooibos, for those people who want to be sure that what they are drinking was produced with these high quality standards.

If you are going to give it to a baby, I recommend making it milder than usual, that is, preparing it with a teaspoon of Rooibos for 500 ml of boiling water, adding the Rooibos, letting it sit for 5 minutes and straining through a very fine strainer to prevent some of the Rooibos “needles” from passing through.

This herbal tea can be stored cold in the refrigerator, covered, for 2 days, so that when you want to use it, you only need to warm it up and dissolve the milk formula in it to give it to the baby in a bottle.

You can also give the infusion alone when the baby is thirsty. Don't worry about it affecting the baby's nerves, as it DOES NOT contain any nervous stimulants (caffeine), but on the contrary, it is slightly sedative, which will help the baby sleep better.

We will continue to explore other benefits of Rooibos for children and adults very soon!
