Tribute to Lewis Carroll

This year we decided to launch 3 teas with commemorative tins with images alluding to "Alice in Wonderland" written by Lewis Carroll.

This English mathematician, writer and photographer was born in Daresbury, England on January 27, 1832, who lived much longer than most of his contemporaries (almost 66 years since he died on January 14, 1898). His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

He was a deacon of the Anglican Church and a mathematics teacher, as well as a prolific photographer, poet and of course writer.

His most famous work was born from a story he improvised for three young daughters of the dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, they were Lorina aged 13, Alice aged 10 and Edith aged 8. He often took the girls on picnics along the river and on one of these excursions, on 4th July 1862 (as he himself recounts in his diary) he came up with this story that he would call “Alice’s Adventures Underground”. Alice Liddell liked the story so much that she begged him to write it down, which he did in one night and gave the text to the girl.

There has been speculation that he based his character on the girl, but he always denied it. The book was eventually published under the title “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” in 1865 by a famous (and still existing) publisher called Mac Millan, this book was beautifully illustrated by 43 original illustrations by John Tenniel. This first book was followed by 2 more with the same protagonist, “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” and “What Alice Found There”.

Few people know that there is another book with the same protagonist that was published in 1890, “Alice for Little Ones” aimed at children under 5 years old.

We love the author's combination of fantasy, madness, absurdity and nonsense, along with logical and mathematical paradoxes, with a bit of philosophy of daily life, here is a small sample:

“Start at the beginning and continue until you reach the end, then forever”

“How long is forever? Sometimes, just a second”

“Why I sometimes believe in up to 6 impossible things before breakfast”

“If everyone concentrated on their own affairs, the world would move much faster than it does now”

“I don’t think so.” “Then you shouldn’t talk!” replied the Hatter.

“It is only impossible if you believe it is”

“Am I crazy?” “I’m afraid so, but I’ll tell you a secret, the best people are.”

“How do you know I’m crazy?” “You must be, otherwise you wouldn’t have come here.”

We love the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and we also love the hurried White Rabbit and the angry Queen. That's where the inspiration for our 3 commemorative blends came from, in honor of Lewis Carroll, with original illustrations that honor each name:
